Surtron Technologies’ MWD-MP system combines high accuracy sensors with positive pulse data transmission. The MWD-MP was introduced to enable operation in areas where formation conditions hamper EM transmission or to allow several rigs to operate in close proximity without interference. In addition it also allows operation from offshore floating platforms. The addition of positive pulse transmission to our tool range has resulted in a flexible product suitable for use in any drilling environment.
The MWD-MP system is normally situated behind the drilling assembly in a non magnetic collar providing continuous data transmission directly to the surface. Directional data is measured down-hole and transmitted to surface as pressure pulses through the mud column. These are generated by momentarily blocking the fluid flow through a special pulser sub. At surface the pulses are detected by a pressure transducer and are processed for display on the drilling console. Surveys are normally taken after each joint of pipe is drilled and while the next joint of pipe is loaded providing inclination and azimuth of the borehole. After making a connection the pumps are re-started and the survey data is then transmitted to the surface allowing the directional driller to plan the next phase of drilling.
Where used in conjunction with depth tracking the system offers a full suite of LWD sensors including Pressure while Drilling, Gamma, CPR Resistivity, Vibration, ROP and Temperature. The MWD-MP is designed as a modular probe based system with flexible centralisers that are compatible with most drill collar sizes providing a one size fits all solution. In addition the system is also retrievable, an important feature should the drill string become stuck in hole.
