The GYR-SR operates on an e-line unit so that data may be monitored by an operator on surface. The standard instrument casing is 45mm OD however a slim-line version is also available at 42mm OD. The GYR-SR is a surface referenced system and combines rugged reliability with accuracy.

Unlike magnetic based survey systems gyros are not affected by the presence of magnetic rock formations and can be used to conduct surveys within steel casing or drill pipe. The GYR-SR is referenced to north at the surface prior to running the survey and all data recorded along the drill path is related to this initial reference.

During operation the instrument is stopped at a survey station momentarily and survey data is recorded providing an independent reference point at each station. Drift calibrations are performed at pre-determined intervals during the survey to ensure data is of the highest quality. Recorded data are then transmitted to the surface and processed allowing the operator to plot an accurate well profile.

APPLICATIONS:

The most common applications are:

  • Accurate delineation of drill path - free from magnetic interference
  • Cased hole / in-rod surveying applications
  • Whipstock / DHM and other kickoff orientations

ADVANTAGES:

  • accurate and reliable
  • not affected by magnetic interference from drill pipe or magnetic rock formations
  • lengthy field calibrations are not required prior to each survey
  • drill collar azimuth does not need to be pre-determined
  • no need to gyro-compass each survey in vertical drill holes, therefore quick operation
